Call for Action – Keep Fresh Air Fresh campaign
Dear Victorian ANZLCNF members,
Victoria is the only state in Australia that has not either already introduced or announced an intention to introduce smokefree outdoor dining and drinking areas.
As a cancer specialist, we ask you to join our campaign and support a complete ban on smoking in outdoor dining and drinking areas. To do so, we would appreciate if you click here by Friday 17th May, 2013 and make your submission to Victoria’s Department of Health (it takes just one minute). Your submission will also be sent to the Department and to Victoria’s top decision makers – Premier Denis Napthine, Health Minister David Davis and your local Member of Parliament.
As the current legislation currently allows outdoor areas to be up to 75% enclosed, hospitality workers and patrons are being exposed to potentially dangerous levels of second-hand smoke. Exposure to second-hand smoke increases the risk for chronic and even fatal health conditions that include cardiovascular disease, heart disease and lung cancer. Second-hand smoke exposure can also bring on acute health events including asthma and acute cardiac arrest.
When similar smokefree laws were introduced in Queensland, one in four smokers was prompted to make a quit attempt.
